The Mutaliyarbhagam Rameswaram temple is owned by the Tamil-speaking Vellala Pillai community. One can notice the attempt to strike a similarity with the famous Rameswaram temple of Tamil Nadu as one notices the architecture of the Mutaliyarbhagam Rameswaram Temple at Karuvelippadi at Thoppumpady in Kochi.
The temple gets its name Mutaliyarbhagam because the area was owned in the distant past by a Tamil Vellala Pillai, called Mutaliyar, who was also the custodian of the temple. The Vellala Pillais, who are devotees of Siva, migrated to Kochi from Tamil Nadu. Legend has it that they were on a mission to look after Ganesh, the child of Siva and Parvathy.
